Cancer Education Resources

One of the best ways to support your loved one with cancer is to educate yourself about cancer. Many well-meaning people will tell you many “facts” about cancer and give you advice based on these “facts”. You need to know enough about the disease to separate fact from fiction in these interactions.

Let me be clear, unless you are a doctor yourself, you will never know more about cancer and its treatment than your doctors. You have to respect their knowledge and counsel. But you also need to have the knowledge to ask the right questions, or bring up something that may have slipped your doctor’s mind.

Another reason you should get educated is that your loved one is getting a great deal of information thrown at them – you need to be there to simplify this information when they get overwhelmed. I found that when my wife had a better idea of what was going on with her body, her mind was put at ease. She didn’t need to know everything, she just needed a basic understanding of the state of the disease in her body.

Here are some resources with which to get educated. Also check out my review of the great and informative book, The Emperor of All Maladies.
